Betty Chungliu

(May 26, 1940 – July 25, 2025)

It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the passing of our beloved family member and friend, Betty Chungliu. Betty passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, after an illness, at the age of 85.

Born in Guangzhou on May 26, 1940, Betty was a native of Huiyang, Guangdong, and spent her formative years in Guangzhou. A diligent student, she completed her education locally and graduated from Guangzhou Educational University, laying the foundation for her future career in education.

In the 50s, Betty moved to Hong Kong, embarking on a new chapter of her life in this vibrant city. In 1961, she married Mr. Tong Chung, beginning a beautiful partnership. After her marriage, Betty joined Lap Pun Kindergarten as a teacher in 1963. With love and patience, she nurtured young minds, imparting knowledge and warmth to her students. She dedicated 19 precious years to this role, earning deep respect and affection from colleagues, parents, and students alike.

In 1982, Betty and her husband, Tony immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco. Embracing her new environment with remarkable resilience and a lifelong commitment to learning, she proactively pursued banking-related studies. Through her dedicated efforts and professional training, Betty joined Bank of America in San Francisco as a bank teller in 1985. She served clients in the financial sector with the same diligence, meticulousness, and professionalism that characterized her teaching career until her well-deserved retirement in 2005.

During her retirement, Betty and her beloved husband, Tony, enjoyed a peaceful and fulfilling life. They cherished traveling together, exploring numerous destinations. They particularly enjoyed visits to Las Vegas, the leisurely pleasures of cruise vacations, and frequent trips back to memory-filled Hong Kong to reunite with family and friends.

However, life inevitably brings moments of profound loss. In 2023, Betty suffered the devastating loss of her lifelong companion when Mr. Tony Chung passed away, leaving her to endure deep grief.

Following this immense personal loss, Betty's health gradually declined. In July 2025, she was hospitalized due to an enterovirus infection. Unfortunately, she developed complications leading to kidney failure. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, she passed away peacefully.

Betty's life was diligence, resilience, and devotion. From her student years in Guangzhou, to her dedicated work in Hong Kong's education field, to her career transition and perseverance in the United States, she consistently faced life with optimism and a positive spirit. She was deeply loving and responsible towards her family, earnest and committed in her work, and passionate about life. Her passing leaves us with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss.

We will forever cherish the memory of Betty's gentle presence, her kindness, and her strength. May she now be joyfully reunited with Tony in heaven, smiling once more, as her name suggested.

Smiling!
